2009 Mega Wind Fest

High-wind sailing coming to Caraquet!

June 22, 2009

Acadian Peninsula - Caraquet will be the host of the 2009 Canadian Windsurfing Master Cup as part of the 2009 Mega Wind Fest.

Close to 50 windsurfers from across Canada will participate in this annual competition taking place August 1-3.

“The Mega Wind Fest allows us to attract more participants and brand the Acadian Peninsula as a world-class destination for wind sports. This event should be beneficial to the region’s economy as we are expecting to get international visibility. The KPWT has access to over 400 millions viewers worldwide which will help us get that visibility”, explains the event coordinator Roch Chiasson.

Spectators will be able to witness one-of-a-kind colourful shows. The official competition site will be located behind the Super 8 Motel in Caraquet where competitors will show off their skills with spectacular tricks and with sky-high jumps in front of Caraquet’s caps.

Here are some of the evens to be showcased:
  • Slalom : downwind slalom course
  • Course Racing : triangle course racing
  • Caraquet Island: windsurfing and kitesurfing long-distance course

The Acadian Peninsula is among the top destinations chosen by wind sports amateurs. It is often compared to the Mont-Saint-Anne and the Canadian Rockies known for their world-class ski accommodations. The region has been attracting a growing number of tourists over the past few years. Many return on a yearly basis to take advantage of Mother Nature’s best sites to practice windsurfing, kitesurfing and snowkiting.

With Acadian and Francophone roots, the Mega WindFest – an international event - will take place at various sites in the Acadian Peninsula throughout the month of August.

The 2009 Canadian Windsurfing Master Cup will kick off the festivities of the Festival acadien de Caraquet taking place August 1-15.
