The Toronto Connection

PWA Profiles Torontos own Philip Soltysiak

January 8, 2009

Canada's freestyle head honcho shows why he's still paving the way for Canadian freestylers.

At just 21 years old, Philip Soltysiak has already achieved great things in his windsurfing career, including becoming the Canadian junior windsurfing champion at 16 years old.

Coming from humble windsurfing roots, Soltysiak first got hooked on the sport back in 1995, when he learned the basics on a sail his mother sewed for him to use on the original windsurfer. Though the gear has moved on considerably from those days, Soltysiak's drive and ambition have always been present.

Now with 13 years of windsurfing experience under his belt, the Toronto local has shifted his focus from racing, to focus solely on the super progressive freestyle discipline. Recently finishing 17th overall at the end of 2008, Soltysiak's second full PWA season looks to have further fuelled his desire to break into freestyle's highly contested top ten.

Hard at work over the winter, Soltysiak has just released a short teaser of his antics while training for the 2009 PWA season, in Jericoacoara, Brazil. With more doubles than you can shake a stick at, and higher, faster more powerful moves, this brief insight into what we can expect in 2009 is mouth watering to say the least. See it for yourself, HERE.

Phil Soltysiak is sponsored by Starboard and Dakine.
