hi,

thanks for that link. looks like sails/masts will fall under 9506.29.00 (Others in Sailboard equipment). Goods that originate in the United States are entitled to receive the UST tariff treatment (no tariff). The UST rate of duty is “free”. That is, if a good is considered to be originating in the United States, no customs duties will be imposed on that good upon its entry into Canada, provided that a valid certificate of origin is included in the shipment.

Could be an issue of "only" paying the tax with no tariff.

 If you are interested in testing your own masts (IMCS and bend curve) here is a link that tell you how. I am just not sure how credible the author is though. :D

Chapter 95 states that sails are covered in Chapter 63.

A quick look there shows a slightly different number for the duty involved. All comes down to how well the individual duty officer knows his stuff :)
http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/trade-commerce/ta ... 12-eng.pdf

I'm trying to scrape my email for the duty paid on items we brought back from the US for the UBC Sailing Club back when I was in vancouver. Boards was definitely 9.5%; but booms/masts/sails I can't recall.
If I find out, I'll follow up here.

FWIW's Naish boards are all made in Thailand, everything else (masts, booms, sails, extensions), all made in China.

Sails look wicked. Put me down for a white 4.5 and black 4.0. I would be interested in a 400cm mast as well.

...great response guys. I have updated the list, if you do not see your name on it and you definitely want in on the group buy, please let me know so I can get you added.

Need 2 more sail confirmations....

How about if we make it to 15 sails I'll send everyone in on the MapleFreak Group Buy a WindsurfCanada T-Shirt to go with your new rigs!

I am in Ottawa and would be interested in buying the 400cm mast.
Is anybody interested to add it to his order of 2 sails and get a lower price?

Interesting that my post on the Quebec forum had the coldest of receptions, as viewed as an insult to Quebec, to be honest I did not even see that one coming. In retrospect, it makes sense. Still, I can't believe there is such divide even down to a windsurfing sail. Oh well.

Hi Guys,

Bit of a small snag. The 6m sail IS AVAILABLE (new this year) however is not listed on the HSM site. I will have a luff length for it shortly.

For everyone ordering a mast, please take a second look at the luff lengths for the 2012 sails here

http://www.hotsailsmaui.com/sail.php?uid=1

just to make sure what your ordering is what you need. Shoot me an email or leave a message here if you have any questions.

For anyone who may have emailed and does not find their name on the list, please post here and let me know. I think I have added everyone that has emailed me....

From a friend who works at Custom Canada:

There were various codes but the closest to windsurfing sails would be 6306.30.00.00 This is a general description.

Duty is 16%
Tax is 13%

There was another code/general that would have the Duty @ 9.5% but the description was vague. The mast would possibly fall under this code.

Here is the contact information for our Commercial Operations: 905-676-3626 (24hr info line). This is the office that would be classifying the goods.

when i brought in my kona a couple of years ago, the customs guy thought the duty was too much, so he reclassified it as a 'watertoy', that reduced the duty to 7 or 8% ...lets get him to do the paperwork.. :)

last time I bought a new sail from the states I think I paid 7% duty, it wasnt much, think it was sent fedex

the time before I ordered 2 sails and a mast and I dont think I paid any duty or tax. pretty sure it was fedex and it was like overnight. I figure since the shipment is so quick they just didnt bother processing it.

avoid UPS as your shipper, which it sounds like you are, they are brutal for BROKERAGE charges

just saw post above, hey why not ask hot sails to declare it as WATERTOY ??

Yes, UPS is notoriously "greedy" when it comes to brokerage fee. My son who buys some computer stuff from USA avoids UPS whenever possible.
