:?: Hello to all in the forum.
help needed with a set up>>

a 10 year old wants to windsurf...The biggest board ( most stable), I have , is JP 160l xride; the smallest sail 2.5 m/2 HIFly..I got a junior 340 mast and a junior boom...
I managed to set the rig....seems to be fine...NOW>>the board>>

What size of fin I should use?????
I have only regular freeride 48, 52 's fin....but with those, it seems, he cannot turn the board with that small sail...Could you reply regarding the fin size, and /or.....what else I could try to make it work??

Thank you

I've tried teaching some people on large sluggish boards and sometimes it just comes down to lack of sail area to really get enough pressure to turn the board around.

I'm not sure if the fin selection will help, somebody who knows gear better than me might be able to comment.

Are you able to turn the board with the 2.5? And how easy is it?
If you find yourself having to really be aggressive, learning the sail very very far etc. to get the turn going, then imagine how tough it'll be without knowing exactly what to do / how it should feel.

One concept I really focus on teaching is that while you can move the sail around to different positions to steer, it's really their feet doing all the work. One exercise I get them to do is to hold the sail flagging down-wind (and remind them that the sail, given enough time, will always have the clew turn back downwind). Then I get them to walk the board in a 360 underneath them.

I have been windsurfing with my children for the past few years.
Initially, I had them sailing on my old Equipe assuming they needed the volume (they don't).

2 years ago bought a Starboard Starsurfer (~140L). It is a board designed for kids to learn on. I also bought a 3.0m kids rig to go with it.

This set up was perfect for my 10 year old son (80 lbs, 4'10") to get going this year. By the end of the summer he was completely independent and could sail anywhere.

The Starsurfer has 2 x 40 cm low aspect fins (one in the centre). My son would angle the sail back (heading up or down) and then go into neutral and walk around the rest of the turn. In much the same way Jay describes.

My 15 year old daughter uses the same setup (without the centre fin) with 3.5 m sail and is able to foot steer without trouble and she takes the board into fairly strong wind without any difficulty.

I suspect that the board might be a bit too big for him to swing the board around.

I just noticed the date. -How did the rest of the summer go?
